Upgrades and Retrofits
Dramatically Improve your CMMs Capability. Sheffield has a
comprehensive menu of solutions to make existing CMMs more productive
no matter what their age or condition. New controls, processors and
inspection software can make older Sheffield, Cordax, Giddings &
Lewis or Starrett CMMs faster, adaptable to new applications, and even
more reliable.
Genuine Sheffield Retrofits And Upgrades
Your Sheffield or Starrett CMM was designed and built for many years
of trouble-free service. In many cases, we can upgrade your existing
CMM to the newest processors and PC-DMIS® software, so you
can take advantage of new software features and the latest computers
and operating systems. In some cases, your machine might even run
faster! Other improvements include:
- Update to PC-DMIS inspection software for dramatic new
programming power and flexibility, including programming from CAD
models, program simulation and advanced reporting and SPC features.
- Converting a manual CMM to a DCC machine for a dramatic gain in productivity. (Starrett CMMs can not be converted.)
- Upgrading
to the latest touch and analog scanning probes to enhance accuracy and
flexibility. (Starrett controllers will not do scanning.)
- Every retrofitted CMM comes with a complete warranty and technical support.
Field Refurbish/Retrofit Combination
If you have a worn CMM that does the job well and is already
familiar to your operators, don't replace it — refurbish it on-site and
be back up and running in no time. We'll bring your CMM back to
original specs and improve productivity, reliability and ease of use
with new state-of-the-art measurement processors, probes and PC-DMIS
inspection software — plus new bearings, scales and other components to
restore peak performance. You'll also get a full warranty and thorough
operator training classes.
FAQ on Retrofits
Q. How long will my machine be off-line?
A. We try to keep the disruption to a minimum. Depending on
what's required, your retrofit could be completed in a matter of a few
days. Most retrofits take less than two weeks.
Q. Will you have to take my machine back to the factory?
A. No. We do all retrofits at your location.
Q. Will my part programs transfer?
A. In most cases, yes. We have migration utilities for most
part programs written on most Sheffield software for the last 20
years. In most cases we can partially or completely migrate your
programs so you won't have to rewrite.
Q. Why should I retrofit?
A. Of course, you'll be getting the latest version of Windows
based software. As mentioned before, in most cases, your part programs
can be migrated to the new system. An important reason that many
companies decide to retrofit is to avoid having a machine down awaiting
an emergency retrofit. This happens when a machine is still operating
with a discontinued processor that Sheffield is no longer able to
obtain repair parts for-- requiring a full retrofit in order to get
back up and running. Many companies would rather plan the retrofit
process-- obtain purchase orders, schedule the downtime and plan when
the machine will be off-line for retrofit. You can check support
status of Sheffield processors on the support status page.
FAQ on Upgrades
Q. Why should I upgrade MeasureMax?
A. MeasureMax has been through a total of 23 releases in its
history. We've made a lot of changes and enhancements to the product
in that time, adding new features, and time-saving enhancements.
Q. Will an upgrade require a service call?
A. Possibly. If you require a firmware upgrade, we may have to make a site visit to install the upgrade.
Q. Will I need a new computer?
A. This depends on how far forward the migration takes you.
Current versions of Sheffield software are running on Windows XP or
Windows 2000. Computers built before the year 2000 generally cannot
run these operating systems, so if this is your situation, you'll need
a new computer. Sheffield uses exclusively Dell Optiplex computers,
and we can quote you one with the software pre-loaded if you wish. You
may also purchase your own computer (we strongly suggest Dell).
Q. What is the support status on my Current Software?
A. If you're running any version of MeasureMax or MaxLite, we
are still offering full technical support on these packages. Prior
versions of software, such as DirectInspect and OFI/FLB have reached
end of support status. You can read more about support status on the the status page.
Q. What are some of the typical models upgraded or retrofitted?
A.
